Artist Statement

My work arises from personal feelings and relates to memories of migration. My childhood was marked by constant migration; I lived in different places with different family members. So, for me, home is both the beginning and the end of migration, and migration itself reshapes, expands and even deconstructs the concept of home. I am particularly interested in the fluid, shifting relationship between these elements. Home implies identity and security, and I believe that an ongoing engagement with these issues can help one to maintain a stable core of self in different environments.

Recently, I have been using geometric forms, hazy imagery, and metaphorical compositions to explore the relationship between people and environments—both in the social and geographical sense. As Carl Marx stated, the essence of man is not an abstract being inherent in each single individual; in its reality, it is the ensemble of the social relations. I continue to choose cardboard for etching. It’s light, fragile, and
malleable . The adaptability and ease of layering make it an ideal medium for expressing multiplicity and reconfigurability.
