         induction on etching

Today was the induction session for etching. The material provided was zinc plates. I’ve previously worked with copper plates for etching, and the process is largely the same—using acid to etch the plate. However, this was my first time experimenting with large chunks of rosin. I had previously used dusting techniques to create tonal areas on the plate, but I discovered that melting larger pieces of rosin directly onto the surface could produce corrosion-resistant white dots. Additionally, applying highly concentrated acid directly to the plate can create soft, brushstroke-like gray tones. I utilized this element of unpredictability to create this image.

In this piece, I aimed to depict people closely connected amidst dynamic winds. At the time, I already had keywords in mind, such as migration and mother-daughter relationships, but I hadn’t yet fully explored what exactly I wanted to convey. This image was created as part of my ongoing process of reflection and exploration.
